How often do you praise your workers?

While some cynics may think their occupation is a thankless job, this might be a sign that businesses need to flip the script on employee recognition. As companies analyze the effectiveness of their incentive compensation programs in motivating employees to meet their sales goals, they should assess whether they offer enough praise for their workers, either through highlighting their achievements in a companywide email or giving them the right amount of sales incentive compensation.

The International News Media Association (INMA) provided three main reasons for organizations to recognize staff members, especially during companies’ most trying times, including increasing employee confidence. As companies try to align their performance objectives with their rewards and recognition programs, they should acknowledge the impact praise has on employee performance and productivity. The INMA blog argues that offering praise when the company is struggling could help reaffirm the values of the firm by rewarding employees who add value to the business.

While providing workers praise for their work during hardships is effective in helping companies tread water when other firms are going under, this isn’t the only time they should give their workers a round of applause. Regular praise of their work could boost employee motivation in the workplace, which could translate into greater levels of productivity.

Connection between praise and job satisfaction
According to a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management and Globoforce, 55 percent of employees said being recognized by their managers is very important to their job satisfaction – the highest representation of workers in 10 years. To help achieve higher job satisfaction, the vast majority of businesses already have an established employee recognition program, the survey said.

To get the most of their recognition programs, however, it could be beneficial to go over the best ways to praise your employees for their hard work.

  • When managers think about how to approach praise for their employees Inc. Magazine recommends that they come from a sincere place. Although sales staff love praise, managers should make sure that the comments they are offering are due to actual achievements rather than forcing a compliment.
  • Companies could also give workers small or large incentives as part of their rewards and recognition programs. In measuring employee performance using sales effectiveness metrics, companies are more efficient in rewarding the right workers with bonuses, merit increases or other incentives.
